Sep 3, Consider the Waterjet Cutting Process! - Part 3

The Intesifier Pump.

Early ultra-high pressure cutting methods used hydraulic intensifier pumps exclusively. At that time, the intensifier pump was the only pump efficient at reliably developing pressures high enough for waterjet machining.

How do they work? A simplified explanation follows.

Some sort of powerplant or electrical motor drives a hydraulic pump that pumps hydraulic fluid with pressures from 1,000 to 4,000 psi into the intensifier cylinder.

The hydraulic fluid consequently pushes at a large piston to create a high force on a small-diameter plunger. This plunger pressurizes the water.

The intensifier system is a dual motion cylinder in which hydraulic fluid is introduced alternately into one side and after that the other. The hydraulic piston pressurizes the water on one side as a result of pushing the small-diameter plunger toward the end of the intensifier cylinder. This activity also directs the water through a check valve and to the outlet. The plunger then retracts and another check valve allows low pressure water to be pulled into the plunger cylinder. The same process is carried out on the opposing end of the cylinder.

The backwards and forwards motion within the intensifier piston results in a pulsating flow of water at extremely high pressure. To help with making the water flow a lot more consistent, the intensifier pump has an "attenuator" canister which behaves as a high-pressure surge container. The usage of this attenuator reduces pressure variances to a few thousand psi for each stroke.

Aug 25, Consider the Waterjet Cutting Process! - Part 3

Some of the primary costs to operate a waterjet include the power, abrasive, replacing the worn table slats, water, cutting assembly and pump consumables.

Abrasive-removal devices are a worthy investment decision to remove used abrasive and gives the benefit of improving machine uptime.

A removal of abrasive by hand will take somewhere around six to twelve hours, depending on the actual tank size. This includes time to drain the water tank, take out the slats, dig out the abrasive and fill the tank back up with water.

Apply your equipment shop rate and labor rate per clean out, and it immediately becomes apparent the cost-effective advantages of the abrasive removal system.

Other running costs to consider include the wear to the high-pressure pump, including high-pressure seals, check valves, dump valve, water filters.

Because of the nature of waterjet cutting and abrasives, cutting heads too are subject to wear of nozzles, jewel and on/off valves.

It's uncommon to have to replace worn parts on the machine's CNC xyz axis motion system.

Consumers also record they favor a one-operation process whereby they do not have to finish the cut edge or incorporate supplementary operations.

Waterjet also provides the cabability to cut thick components, generally 3/4 inch and above, cost effectively.

This ability may well supplement the use of lasers by creating more capacity for the volume jobs - a zone in which lasers really shine.

Abrasive waterjet cutting is used for almost any steel based application or with dense rubber, thicker plastics, a number of composites and all brittle materials like glass, granite and marble.

This is not to imply that they cannot cut very thin materials, they certainly can. But with the thinner materials, there are other feasable options.

When the material being cut is fairly soft and thin, a water only application is preferred.

Using only water, without the abrasive, is nice and clean, cheap, and typically a quieter process.

Aug 16, Consider the Waterjet Cutting Process! - Part 1

Waterjet cutting is employed within a variety of market sectors more than just engineering subcontract work.

Traditional materials including stainless, mild steel and aluminium through to tough, high-end materials like inconel, hastalloy, and titanium can be cut very effectively with waterjet. Nearly every non-metallic material including polymer, thermoplastic, rubber, vinyl, MDF, drywall, foam, glass, polystyrene, and a host of other materials may be cut, including composite resin materials as well as carbon fibres.

Waterjet cutting lends itself to components utilized in aerospace in which, as a rule, heat is not suitable as part of the cutting process. With these applications, it is frequently used on thicker materials for roughing out profiles and then afterwards the edge is finished with a machining center. This approach frees up machining center capacity and shortens the whole job duration time, since it is still speedier to make use of both the processes. Customers can also obtain better sheet yield as the part gap on the profile nest is smaller, equating to extra parts per sheet in comparison to machining the profile.

Aug 13, Obama Signs New Manufacturing Bill!

President Barack Obama signed a bill on Wednesday that will strengthen American manufacturing and American jobs, and help U.S. manufacturers by reducing and suspending some tariffs on certain materials they must import to make their products.

Obama signed The Manufacturing Enhancement Act of 2010 which is designed to create jobs, help American companies compete, and strengthen manufacturing as a key driver of our economic recovery.

At the bill signing, Obama said, "And here's how it works. To make their products, manufacturers -- some of whom are represented here today -- often have to import certain materials from other countries and pay tariffs on those materials. This legislation will reduce or eliminate some of those tariffs, which will significantly lower costs for American companies across the manufacturing landscape -- from cars to chemicals; medical devices to sporting goods. And that will boost output, support good jobs here at home, and lower prices for American consumers. Few areas of our economy have been as hard-hit as manufacturing -- not just in recent years, but in recent decades.Throughout the 20th century, manufacturing was the ticket to a better life for generations of American workers. It was the furnace that forged our middle class. But over time, the jobs dried up. Companies learned to do more with less, and outsourced whatever they could. Other nations didn't always live up to trade agreements and we didn't always enforce them. And over the last decade, the manufacturing workforce shrank by 33 percent, leaving millions of skilled, hardworking Americans sitting as idle as the plants that they once worked in. This was before the recent recession left them and millions more struggling in ways they never imagined."

The National Association of Manufacturers says this bill will help create jobs, cut costs for businesses and consumers and boost U.S. exports. The industry trade group says studies show that the bill would increase production by $4.6 billion and support 90,000 jobs.

The association says manufacturers rely on the tariff suspensions to get raw materials and other products that aren't readily available in the U.S.

Aug 7, Car That Runs On Sewage!

The Bio-Bug was launched on Thursday by Wessex Water, which is generating methane from human waste at a sewage treatment works near Bristol.

The company claims the prototype is able to cover 10,000 miles annually on the waste from 70 households.

If the trial proves successful, Volkswagen will consider converting some of its fleet of vehicles to run on biogas.

Mohammed Saddiq, of GENeco, a Wessex Water subsidiary which runs the biogas plant at Avonmouth, said: "Our site has been producing biogas for many years, which we use to generate electricity to power the site and export to the National Grid.

Aug 3, New Solar Energy Conversion Process Discovered!

New solar energy conversion process discovered by Stanford engineers could revamp solar power production.

A new process that simultaneously combines the light and heat of solar radiation to generate electricity could offer more than double the efficiency of existing solar cell technology, say the Stanford engineers who discovered it and proved that it works.

The process, called "photon enhanced thermionic emission," or PETE, could reduce the costs of solar energy production enough for it to compete with oil as an energy source.

Aug 2, Bad News Travels Quickly When Its About Poor Customer Service!

High levels of service to customers do not cost a lot of money and they certainly don't take too much time, but they do require a strong belief in the value of customer service and how it is a major contributor to the future success and profit.

We are all consumers and customers and when we are in the business of providing a service to customers, we can't help ourselves. We always assess the level of service of any business we deal with, either as a customer or supplier. It is so refreshing to go to a business and be pleasantly surprised by the level of customer service we encounter. Over the years, we have become accustomed to receiving less than average levels of service and when we come across a business that excels in this area, we can't help but notice it.

It's clear that those businesses who provide high levels of customer service have legions of loyal customers. The businesses grow by word of mouth advertising and their customers remain loyal through the good times and bad times. It is not surprising that these businesses survive recessions and economic downturns whilst their competitors who don't supply any sort of service, disappear.

If you want to start a lively conversation, sit down with some friends and complain about a business that gave you a horrible customer service. Before you know it, somebody has topped your story and recounted an even worse experience. Now sit back and listen and watch as the conversation enters a downward spiral of complaints and horror stories about businesses that should not survive.

Because we are consumers, we use word-of-mouth marketing in reverse. Instead of telling people how well a business treats their customers, we instinctively take the negative path and ensure that the maximum amount of people hear about our example of appalling customer service. We had no hesitation in naming the business, explaining where it is, how to avoid it and what it has done to us. We create a bad advertisement for that business and earnestly advise all the people we know not to do with them. The cost of this to the business cannot be calculated easily but it is several times the cost of their marketing budget.

These negative experiences cause us to adopt a different opinion. First of all, we have become cynical about advertising and advertising messages. Secondly, we tend to believe friends and family about products and services. Thirdly, we won't buy anything without a recommendation from somebody that we trust.

Jul 31, Solar Power Is Cheaper Than Nuclear?

Two researchers at Duke University say, Electricity from new solar installations is now cheaper than electricity from proposed new nuclear plants. The study was based on trends in North Carolina, which is not even a sun rich state. The data included only photovoltaic generated electricity. CSP, or Concentrating Solar Power is not considered in this study, but is one of the more promising solar technologies available. The crossover point for this study was .16 cents per kWh. Some commercial scale solar developers are now offering electricity at 14 cents a kWh in North Carolina, a price which is expected to continue to drop.

Jul 30, Fly Eyes Used For Solar Cells?

Researchers at Penn State took corneas from blowflies, fixed them on a glass substrate, added a polymer to protect the shape and then coated nine eye arrays in nickel within a vacuum chamber. This created a master biomimetic mold, or template that retained the useful nanoscale features of the macroscale hexagonal eyes. It is anticipated that the template will be used to replicate the pattern exactly.

Earlier research found that properly designed bioinspired compound lenses can significantly improve the light harvesting capabilities of silicon solar cells.
