At that time, the intensifier pump was the only pump efficient at reliably developing pressures high enough for waterjet machining. How do they work? A simplified explanation follows. Some sort of powerplant or electrical motor drives a hydraulic pump that pumps hydraulic fluid with pressures from 1,000 to 4,000 psi into the intensifier cylinder. The hydraulic fluid consequently pushes at a large piston to create a high force on a small-diameter plunger. This plunger pressurizes the water. The intensifier system is a dual motion cylinder in which hydraulic fluid is introduced alternately into one side and after that the other. The hydraulic piston pressurizes the water on one side as a result of pushing the small-diameter plunger toward the end of the intensifier cylinder. This activity also directs the water through a check valve and to the outlet. The plunger then retracts and another check valve allows low pressure water to be pulled into the plunger cylinder. The same process is carried out on the opposing end of the cylinder. The backwards and forwards motion within the intensifier piston results in a pulsating flow of water at extremely high pressure. To help with making the water flow a lot more consistent, the intensifier pump has an "attenuator" canister which behaves as a high-pressure surge container. The usage of this attenuator reduces pressure variances to a few thousand psi for each stroke. Before you know it, somebody has topped your story and recounted an even worse experience. Now sit back and listen and watch as the conversation enters a downward spiral of complaints and horror stories about businesses that should not survive. Because we are consumers, we use word-of-mouth marketing in reverse. Instead of telling people how well a business treats their customers, we instinctively take the negative path and ensure that the maximum amount of people hear about our example of appalling customer service. We had no hesitation in naming the business, explaining where it is, how to avoid it and what it has done to us. We create a bad advertisement for that business and earnestly advise all the people we know not to do with them. The cost of this to the business cannot be calculated easily but it is several times the cost of their marketing budget. These negative experiences cause us to adopt a different opinion.
